§ 2.31. Mayor pro tempore; selection; duties.

  • At the first regular meeting in January of each year, the city council shall elect a councilmember to serve as mayor pro tempore by a majority vote. Upon the mayor's disability or absence, the mayor pro tempore shall preside at all meetings of the city council and shall assume the duties and powers of the mayor. In the event of the mayor's disability or absence, the mayor pro tempore shall be compensated at the same rate as the mayor. The city council by a majority vote shall elect a new presiding officer from among its members for any period in which the mayor pro tempore is disabled, absent, or acting as mayor. Any such absence or disability shall be declared by majority vote of all councilmembers.
